🗺️ #MapMonday: Tracing Dr. Forwood’s Footsteps in Henderson
This week’s map find takes us to 526 First Street in Henderson, Kentucky – once the home and medical office of Dr. William S. Forwood (1862–1952), one of Henderson’s earliest and most respected physicians.
Shown here is a section of a Sanborn Fire Insurance Map, where you can spot an alley labeled Forwood Ave running just behind the doctor’s residence. It’s a small but fascinating detail that connects the map directly to one of Henderson’s most prominent citizens of the early 20th century.
Dr. Forwood practiced medicine and surgery in Henderson for over 50 years, served as city physician, and was deeply involved in the community through the First Baptist Church and the Masonic order. His home at 526 First Street still stands today – a quiet reminder of a life dedicated to service and healing.
📍 Fernwood Cemetery, where Dr. Forwood and his wife Nellie are buried, preserves his legacy – and now, thanks to this map, we can also see how his name lives on in the city’s very layout.
