Gabriel Decataur Sugg was born 23 Dec 1828 to Wesley Willie Sugg (1784 – 1859) and Kezia Hart Sugg (1793 – 1888).

Gabriel Sugg married Harriet Flanders (1834 – 1919) in 1856.


Gabriel Sugg died 25 May 1896 (aged 67) and was buried in Fernwood Cemetery Section 8 / Lot 1040 / Grave 4.

Mr. Gabriel Decatur Sugg died at his home in this city, No. 425 Green street, at an early hour this morning. His death had been expected for several days and when the end came he was surrounded by loved ones. He has been ill for the past five or six months. The funeral will take place from the residence Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock. The remains will be laid to rest in beautiful Fernwood cemetery.
The deceased was one of the old citizens of Henderson county, his father having settled near this city many years ago. The first brick house built in the county outside of Henderson was built by the father of the deceased. The decased was born in 1829. He received a liberal education and in 1856 was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Flanders, who survives him. There were three children born to this union, all whom are still living. They are Mrs. Ed Hopkins, of Henderson; Dr. O. F. Sugg, of Prophit. Carroll county, Tenn.; Miss Clara Sugg, of this city. He also leaves one brother and five sisters who are as follows: Mr. Edgar Sugg, Dryesburg, Tenn, Miss Julia Sugg, Henderson; Miss Emma Sugg, Henderson; Mrs. John Ed Dixon, Corydon; Mrs. Lorena Lockets Henderson; Mrs. Caroline Stevens, Springfield, Mo.
Mr. Sugg was a man of influence and had scores of friends. He had several brotners in the Confederate army. At one time he held the office of township assessor. He was a democrat in politics and while not an active worker in his party was firm in his convictions, at the same time respecting the belief of others. He loved his home and was a man of charity. He belonged to no church nor secret society, yet was a firm believer in both. Mr. Sugg will be greatly missed by his friends who were legion.
