Mount Zion Cemetery is the oldest African American cemetery in Henderson County, Kentucky, established in the early 1900s. Over 900 individuals are buried here, including victims of the 1918 influenza epidemic, Civil War and Spanish-American War veterans, and a Buffalo Soldier. Originally managed by the Henderson Cemetery and Burial Association until its dissolution in 1937, the cemetery is now maintained by the Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Recognized as an important historic and cultural site, Mount Zion symbolizes the resilience and pride of Henderson’s Black community and is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
