The Wampus of Henderson… That Wasn’t
In October 1905, curiosity spread across Henderson about a strange creature-a “wampus”-reportedly on display at a local livery stable. Depending on who you ask today, a wampus might be a terrifying Appalachian cryptid.

But when locals went to see it…

It turned out to be something far less legendary.

Henderson Morning Gleaner 17 Oct 1905

Much curiosity was aroused over a report of a wampus, said to be on exhibition at Ashby Bros. livery stable, which when Tom Cullen and others went around to see, proved to be nothing more than a remarkably cross and ugly black cat brought from Evansville by George Berry. George bought the animal for a good midnight serenader and didn’t miss it, as it can out vie all the demons in the infernal regions in the songs supposed in use in the last world.
