Kockritz Leather Goods

Established in 1888, Kockritz Leather Goods operated at 318–320 Second Street in Henderson. Originally known as the Henderson Saddlery Company, it grew from a maker of saddles and harness into a retailer of luggage and leather accessories.

Founder Hermann Kockritz Sr. was born in Saxony, Germany, in 1848. He learned leatherworking in Europe before coming to America. His sons apprenticed with him, but Walter remained to carry on the family trade.

According to historian Frank Boyett, the original shop burned about 1906, and Hermann rebuilt that fall. A photograph dated approximately 1908 shows the brick storefront with saddlery lettering and horse equipment displayed outside.

As automobiles reduced demand for harness, the business adapted, adding luggage in 1910. Its stock eventually included trunks, suitcases, traveling bags, briefcases, billfolds, belts, and handbags.

Hermann died in 1921, and his son Arthur Walter Kockritz assumed the business. In 1927, Mrs. Walter Kockritz and Essie McCoy also opened the Hat Shoppe at the same address.

Traditional leatherwork continued alongside retail sales. A 1935 advertisement offered farm and wagon harness, saddles, bridles, and repairs. By 1941, customers could also purchase leather gifts, golf bags, and luggage for air and rail travel.

Newspaper features in 1943 described Walter making patterns, cutting leather by hand, and completing intricate stitching. Some longtime customers reportedly insisted on goods he had made himself.

Asked in 1934 about a man’s greatest assets, Walter named “character, patience, good will and lots of friends.”
