Branson Surveys: Mapping Henderson’s Growth Since 1968
In a profession where accuracy is everything and history often lies buried in deeds and boundary lines, Branson Surveys helped shape Henderson in ways most people never see but experience every day.
The firm was founded in 1968 by Richard “Dick” Branson, a World War II veteran and former superintendent of public works in Henderson. His work laid the foundation for a business that would become deeply intertwined with the region’s growth, not just measuring land but helping define how it would be used.
That foundation carried forward into the next generation.
Dennis “Denny” Branson took over the company in 1980 and became a licensed professional land surveyor shortly after. Over the next four decades, he transformed Branson Surveys into one of the most influential development partners in the area. His knowledge of land, property history, and local development was widely respected and often described as unmatched.
Through those years, Branson Surveys was involved in the vast majority of industrial, commercial, and residential projects in Henderson and the surrounding counties. The company surveyed tens of thousands of acres and played a critical role in shaping everything from neighborhoods and farms to major industrial sites. Their work supported projects tied to companies such as Walmart, Tyson Foods, Alcoa, and Big Rivers Electric, each one adding another layer to Henderson’s modern landscape.
What set Denny Branson apart was not just the volume of work but his deep understanding of the land itself. Long before digital mapping systems became standard, his office served as a hub of institutional knowledge. His 1996 publication of local land plats became a widely used resource for developers and government offices alike, helping guide decisions before GIS systems were commonplace.
Surveying for Branson was never just about lines on a map. It was about research, interpretation, and connecting present day property boundaries to decades or even centuries of recorded history. Each project required digging into deeds, retracing earlier surveys, and understanding how Henderson’s landscape evolved over time. The work demanded both technical precision and historical insight.
Operating for years out of their Second Street office, Branson Surveys became a trusted name in Henderson. Whether working with private landowners, major corporations, or appearing before planning commissions, the firm built a reputation grounded in professionalism and a deep commitment to the community.
In 2015, that reputation was recognized when Branson Surveys was named Small Business of the Year by the Henderson Chamber.
Even later in life, Denny Branson remained involved in the business, continuing to advise and consult. His passing marked the end of an era, but not the end of the legacy.
In Henderson, the work of Branson Surveys is still visible today, etched into property lines, roadways, developments, and neighborhoods across the county. It is quiet work, often unnoticed, but lasting in every sense, shaping the city one boundary line at a time.
