Carlinburg was a small town located about 5 miles East of Scuffletown, almost at the county line. Founded by John Samuel Vannada (1848-1923) who owned the land and was the postmaster at the turn of the century. The town had a school with 118 students in 1905. Miss Melvina Vannada was a popular teacher. The town was ultimately abandoned and the land reverted to farm land which was passed down to John’s daughter Ruth and her husband John Miles.

The Miles farm was formerly the site of Carlinburg, a
“ghost town,” owned by the late J. S. Vanada, father of Mrs. Miles. The town has reverted to farm lands since the town was abandoned.
