SUNDAY GLEANER AND JOURNAL, HENDERSON, KENTUCKY, AUGUST 26, 1934.
Henderson’s newest addition in the automobile service station business opens today at 1004 South Green street, it is owned and operated by Joseph A. Funk.
This new station was built along the plans of the regular Standard Oil stations, although this one happens to be privately owned. It is has modern in every respect. It has one hundred and twenty seven foot frontage with the concrete running back thirty one feet from the street to the service station. The station is built of Syrian face brick which is a deep red with black mortar. The station has rest rooms for men and women.
One of the most interesting features at this new station is the instalation of a Wayne gasoline pump. This pump is accurate and registers the number of gallons of gas that is being purchased and also registers the amount of money in the transaction regardless of the price of gasoline. If gasoline is selling in odd cents or fractions of cents and the customer wants a dollars worth of gas it puts in the exact amouat to the fraction of a gallon in gas for the dollar. These pumps have just been put on the market during the past six or eight months and have been put in many stations in the North. It is the first one of its kind to be put in Henderson
Mr. Funk selected the Standard Oil company line of gasoline and oils and tires to handle. In selecting this line of gas and oil was the reason for Mr. Funk making his station a pattern of the Standard Oil station, so that the tourist would recognize it at a glance as a place that sells Standard Oil products.
The lumber and roofing for this service station was supplied by the Humber Lumber company, the cement and electrical fixtures were supplied by the Lambert-Grisbam Hardware company. The sand and gravel was supplied by the Henderson Sand and Gravel company. The plumbing and plumbing fixtures were sold and installed by the Henderson Plumbing company. Al J. Feix furnished and installed all the tinwork. The electrical wiring was done by Allen Rowland.
The Funk Service Station is open now for business. Mr Funk Intended to give a quart of oil with each five gallons of gasoline purchased on his opening which has been the custom with filling stations in the past at their opening, but owing to the oil code of fair competition, free gifts are not allowed and for that reason nothing can be given.
This service station makes another bright spot on lower Green street which is traveled by thousands every day as the two National Highway routes 41 and 60 both travel Green street through Henderson.
