This historic photograph, labeled “Tobacco Scene, Henderson, Ky”, captures a busy view of downtown Henderson around 1915. The vantage point is looking north along the 200 block of North Main Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets, when the street itself was still unpaved dirt.

The street is filled with horse and mule-drawn wagons, each loaded with large, tarpaulin-covered bundles of tobacco. Farmers from the surrounding countryside would bring their harvest into town, lining up along Main Street to deliver their loads to the numerous stemmeries and warehouses that once dominated Henderson’s downtown tobacco trade.

Visible is Elks Home and the old YMCA.
