EVANSVILLE COURIER-TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 1958:

Construction Start Expected Within Month
HENDERSON, Ky. (Special) —A $500,000 shopping center, including a new Kroger supermarket,
will be erected on East 2nd street, across from Henderson County High School, it was reported Monday by Woodring Fryer, president of Eastgate Center, Inc. Construction is expected to begin within a month, probably in April.
THE AREA will be known as Eastgate Center and have eight units under the same roof, with canopies sheltering shoppers between units. The shopping center will be located on a 24.5 acre tract. Bids are being taken for the work, Fryer said, “and plans are being readied for immediate start of construction.”
Donald G. Davis, developer of the Lawndale shopping center in Evansville, is secretary-treasurer of the local center.
A BLACKTOP surfaced parking area will accomodate 550 cars, Fryer said.
The Kroger store will measure 100×140 feet and have 14,000 square feet of floor space. Fryer said Butler Bros. variety stores have leased one of the units, and it will be operated by a woman from Mount Vernon, Ind. He said leases also have been made for a hardware store, dress shop, shoe store, and drug store. In addition, a barber and beauty shop will be located there. A major oil company will operate a service station in front of the center.
