100 / 102 N Main was a difficult building to find information about. Some information states the building was originally built in the 1870’s, but others indicate it was built around 1899. There’s definitely been a building there for quite a long time, but I can’t locate good records showing when it was built.
According to the Henderson Evening Journal on Thu, Feb 26, 1914 and the The Gleaner on Fri, Feb 27, 1914,
George Lyne was born November 30, 1827, in a house that stood at the corner of First and Main streets, on the site of the Arnold Kahn store, and at the time of his death owned that corner property.
Henderson Evening Journal of Thu, Nov 30, 1899 includes an advertisement for “desirable offices in the new Lyne building, corner Main and First”
Arnold Kahn had a business here for years, and eventually J. W. Simon purchased the business.
Frank Boyett says about Simon’s,
“In its earliest days it leased from Lucy Lyne Riley. By 1923 the business took up the basement and main floor for $100 a month, according to a lease on file in the county clerk’s office. Larry Simon didn’t buy the building from Riley’s sons until March 11, 1955, according to that deed.
“In the 1950s… a portion of the ground floor of the building housed the Dairy Whip lunch counter and a jewelry store; the second floor directly above Simon’s held a lawyer’s and a doctor’s office, while the top floor housed a meeting hall,” according to Stinnett’s 2009 article about the stores 90th anniversary.
102 N Main has been the location of many businesses since the building opened.
