“Herbert McAvoy 71 retired Henderson furniture manufacturer and a brother of Miss Margaret McAvoy retired Evansville school teacher, died Friday in St Mary’s Hospital after an illness. He was born in Scott Township Vanderburgh County in September 1867 the son of James and Elisabeth McAvoy. When a young man he went to Henderson where he later established the Henderson Furniture Company, a manufacturing firm. Later he became president of the Henderson Coal and Ice Company and manager of the Henderson Brewery Company and operated stock and bond brokerage business. He retired about five years ago. Surviving besides the later are a sister-in-law Miss Mary O’Byrne Henderson with whom he made his home and several nieces and nephews. His wife Caroline O’Byrne McAvoy died May. Funeral services will be in the home and the Church of Holy Name in Henderson where he was a member many years. Burial in St Louis Cemetery.” -Evansville Press March 22, 1940
