Top Cat Service Stations had 4 Henderson locations:
330 N Green
1139 N Green
1335 S Green
Second Street at Priest

“By 1967 we were up and going, eventually having four locations in Henderson and one in Morganfield.” – Bill Polk Jr.

The Top Cat service station ago at 330 N. Green St not only pumped the first self-serve gasoline in the Tri-State, it was the first in Kentucky.

Taking inspiration from the famous Esso marketing slogan, “Put a tiger in your tank.” Polk said, “Our slogan was a riff on that: ‘Top Cat — the poor man’s tiger,’ ”

In 1974, Polk Jr. went to law school and the stations were leased first for five years to Quality Oil in 1974 (which rebranded them as Amoco stations), then for another five years to Hays Oil. “By 1984 they were pretty well junked and we closed them,”

Charlie Cain was manager of the Top Cat service station at 330 N. Green St. as of March 10, 1970. That station, which no longer exists, became the first self-service station in Kentucky and the first in the Tri-State area in March of 1967. Gleaner File Photo
